Seasonal Closure Announcement

All Yellowstone National Park entrances and park roads are now temporarily closed in preparation for the winter season, EXCEPT for the road between the North Entrance and Northeast Entrance (open year-round, weather permitting).

The North Entrance is OPEN! Visitors can enter through the historic Roosevelt Arch, then take Old Gardiner Road directly into Mammoth.

Conditions permitting, all other entrances and roads are projected to open to oversnow travel by snowmobile and snowcoach at 8:00 AM on December 15.

Fee-Free Entrance Days 2022

On select days of the year, all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone. Mark your calendar for these National Park entrance fee-free dates in 2022!

  • January 17: Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.
  • April 16: First day of National Park Week
  • August 4: Anniversary of Great American Outdoors Act
  • September 24: National Public Lands Day
  • November 11: Veterans Day

Yellowstone National Park Opens for Oversnow Travel

December 15, 2022

December 15, 2022 is the projected opening date for snowmobile and snowcoach travel for the winter season (weather permitting). The Park will be open until approximately March 15, 2023 when the roads close in preparation for spring.

Conditions permitting, roads are scheduled to re-open to oversnow travel at 8:00 AM on the following dates:

  • December 15: West Entrance to Old Faithful, Mammoth to Old Faithful, Canyon to Norris, Canyon to Lake, Old Faithful to West Thumb, South Entrance to Lake, Lake to Lake Butte Overlook, East Entrance to Lake Butte Overlook (Sylvan Pass)

Guided Winter Tours and Snowmobile Rentals are available daily through Yellowstone Vacation Tours and Two Top Snowmobile in West Yellowstone, MT, and Snowcoach Tours leaving from Gardiner, MT are now available as well. Plan your winter getaway today!

Annual Christmas Stroll and Parade of Lights

Fun Run Sled Dog Races

January 14-16, 2023

Professional mushers from all over the world converge on West Yellowstone in early January to train their teams at high elevation in preparation for the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race. The "Fun Run" is a warm-up and provides six- and twelve-dog teams two days of racing at up to 35 miles per day. Enjoy the hyper-activity of excited teams preparing for their dash!

This event is free for spectators, but there is an entry fee for teams.
